Problem statement – The footwear industry’s pursuit of innovation and affordability has led to unsustainable excess production, fueling overconsumption and waste. This results in the production of 20 billion pairs of footwear annually for a global population of 8 billion, significantly increasing the number of old, discarded footwear (ODF) in landfills and oceans thereby harming the environment.

Project objective – Through implementing partners, collect ODF from landfills, waste management agencies, and ragpickers, sort and recycle materials like plastic and rubber, and utilize worn-out parts in power generating units or cement kilns to replace coal and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Project impact  – The company has made significant progress, starting with processing 5% of ODF in FY 2021-22 through a pilot project and scaling up to 50% in FY 2023-24. Notably, in FY 2024-25, Metro Brands achieved a milestone by processing 4,364 tons (10.10 million pairs) of ODF, equivalent to the number of new pairs sold, demonstrating our commitment to sustainability and reducing environmental impact.
